WASHINGTON - The Italian Embassy in Washington hosted the annual meeting of the Council for Relations between Italy and the United States in America, after two years of interruption due to the pandemic.
The Italian ambassador to the USA, Mariangela Zappia, welcomed the participants on the evening of February 6 at Villa Firenze, alongside whom the State Department's assistant secretary for Europe and Eurasia, Karen Donfried, and Moisés Naím, distinguished fellow of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Then, on 7 February, the Italian Embassy hosted the Council workshop, entitled "Fast Forward: A Brave New World Coming". The vice president of the Council and minister of foreign affairs, Antonio Tajani, and the honorary president of the association, the CEO and executive vice president of Pirelli, Marco Tronchetti Provera, spoke via video link at the opening. The Minister of Economy and Finance Giorgetti and the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry Lollobrigida sent video messages. Defense Minister Crosetto sent a written message. The vice president of the Chamber of Deputies, Anna Ascani, took part in the work in Washington.
The workshop, behind closed doors, was divided into sessions dedicated to the geopolitical scenario, the challenges and opportunities of new technologies, the role of Italy in the international scenario and the promotion of Made in Italy and the challenges of sustainability and inclusion. Italian and US representatives from the world of business and finance, higher education and the media took part. The meeting was closed by the vice president of the Italy-USA Council, Gianni Riotta.
"The Italy-USA Council has always been a fruitful forum for dialogue and discussion between high-level exponents of the business world, the media and higher education of our two countries", highlighted Ambassador Zappia in her speech. “Once again this year the meeting offered the opportunity to reflect on the global geopolitical and economic scenario and to reaffirm the importance of the special relationship between Italy and the United States and the driving force that we play together on an international level”.
The Council for Relations between Italy and the United States is an association founded in 1983 on the initiative of Gianni Agnelli and David Rockefeller to promote bilateral relations through dialogue and discussion between industry, economics and finance executives, managers, professionals, scientists , exponents of communication and the media, Italian and American scholars. Marco Tronchetti Provera is currently honorary president. Domenico Siniscalco, managing director and vice president of Morgan Stanley, is the current president. Gianni Riotta, a visiting professor at Princeton University, is executive vice president.
