The new home secretary of the UK Suella Braverman is planning to encourage businesses to make use of existing visa schemes, as she battles to stave off a cabinet row about relaxing immigration controls.
Suella Braverman is understood to be among several cabinet ministers who have concerns that Liz Truss the new Prime Minister wants to relax border controls, in relation to her mission to stimulate economic growth. Mrs. Braverman has argued that overall immigration must fall despite the focus on economic growth.
There is frustration in the Home Office that businesses are calling for immigration rules to be eased. Several new routes were created under the points-based immigration system that was introduced last year post-Brexit, and yet, these new procedures are not being taken advantage of.
The new home secretary Braverman is planning an information campaign targeted at employers who have labour shortages, and it could involve training courses for employers. These might “guide them through the system”, which is still not being fully used by many.
The new schemes, which derive from the latest post-Brexit immigration law of 2021, require UK employers to hold a valid sponsorship license for permission to hire migrant workers from 1st January 2021. EU (therefore Italians as well) nationals already resident in the UK by 31 December 2020 will not be subject to the new rules, provided they have registered for EU settled status by 30 June 2021.
Italian and Eu citizens who are willing to move now to the UK, would need to follow the new rules and have a valid sponsorship in order to be hired and start their life in the UK.
